Homemade Gak
You may remember making Gak, also known as “Glurch,” “Gluep,” and “Flubber,” when you were a kid, whether it was at-home or for a school science project. It’s made from liquid glue, water, and a small quantity Borax, which is a type of powdered laundry detergent. You can choose what consistency to make Gak according to the occasion. It can be gooey and liquid like slime or formable like putty or play dough – it’s up to you. If stored properly, Gak can also be reused. The following recipe takes only two minutes to do and will provide hours of entertainment for your kids.
Ingredients
You don’t need much in the way of ingredients to make Gak at home. If you like making crafts with your kids, you may already have the following ingredients at home:
- School glue: This is the type of liquid glue that comes in a four ounce bottle with a pointed lid. Popular brand names include Elmer’s, Ross, and RoseArt. You will need a minimum of eight ounces or two bottles.
- Borax: You can find Borax at most department stores, hardware stores, pharmacies, and some grocery stores. Gak requires only two tablespoons so you don’t need to buy very much unless you plan on using it for other purposes as well.
- Food coloring: Green is a popular color for Gak, as it gives the substance the look of slime – kids love it. However, you can make Gak with any color you happen to have on hand.
- Water
Materials
You will need the following materials in order to make Gak in your kitchen:
- Mixing bowl
- Spoon
- Plastic cup
- Measuring cup
- Paper towel
- Ziploc bag or Tupperware in order to save the Gak
How-To
Once you’ve gathered your ingredients and materials, you are ready to start mixing! If your children are older they can help by measuring quantities of ingredients and adding them to the bowl. The first step is to add all of the glue into a bowl. Once you’ve squeezed out all the glue, fill the bottle with warm water from the tap, put the cap on, and shake it. Then pour the mixture into the bowl as well. Use a spoon to mix the glue and water. The next step is to add the food coloring. Usually a few drops should be enough. Next, measure one half a cup of water and put it in the plastic cup. Add the Borax and stir to dissolve it. The Borax is a must if you want the mixture to hold like putty. Add the solution slowly to the glue in the mixing bowl. Stir as you add. You will notice the consistency of the substance begin to change. When the mixture has thickened you can use your hands to mix. If the mixture isn’t thick enough continue adding the Borax solution until it is the desired consistency. Once it’s ready, your kids won’t be able to keep their hands off it. Remind them to seal it in a Ziploc bag once they are done playing.
